Hanging Gate, Higher Sutton is branch Pub of the Season, Spring 26
For many years Hydes brewery owned this exceptional pub until in late 2017 they decided that too much money needed spending on it and it was closed down bringing fears that the 400 year old pub would be no more. There were rumours of it becoming a wedding venue!
Fortunately couple Hilary Spokes & James Schofield had other ideas and are slowly adapting the pub at a pace that is sustainable. The white paint that formally covered the building has been stripped away revealing the beautiful stonework. Presently there are just two rooms open and no kitchen as yet. Food is provided by “pop ups”, see social media for these and other events. They can serve up to three cask beers but the range is adjusted according to the expected custom.
The most spectacular thing about this pub is the view. At 320 metres above sea level, you can see a long way on a clear day and there is a viewing shed as the part of the pub that will have the best views, is currently under construction. With Macclesfield Forest being less than a mile away It is popular with walkers and the more energetic cyclists but if you are not up to the walk there is a car park.
The nearest public transport is the 14A bus at Langley village which it is a less than two mile walk to the pub. By car follow signs from Macclesfield for Langley, then when you see the Church House pub, tale the road on the left hand side of it and drive for 1.7 miles.
Come and join us for the presentation that will take place from 1pm on Saturday 25th April.
